In 2012, twenty-eight artists representing each EU country, as well as three Chinese artists, were invited to visit the world-renowned Terracotta Warriors burial sites in Xian, China and to consider ways that these icons of the Emperor Qin's tomb could be reinterpreted within contemporary sculpture in the 21st Century. Each artist responded to the collection of Warriors’, acrobats, and servants in a myriad of different ways, and in so doing reflected a discreet aspect of their own individual culture within the EU and China by making a sculpture that responded to this ancient collection. The significant impact of this exhibition, at a time of unique political flux because of BREXIT, demonstrated distinctive interpretations of this famous collection through contemporary sculpture practice within the historical genre of cultural identity: the last Sino - EU exhibition to be held in the UK? At a time of unique political incentives to develop UK links with China, this exhibition articulates contemporary ideas of EU-Sino relations through the making of original artworks that contemplate specific traits of these historic antiquities. As well as culturally important, this exhibition brings together a unique visual art connectivity between the EU and China at the twilight of the UK's involvement in European identity. Here visitors can have face-to- face encounters with an actual "Dialogue with the Emperor Qin's Warriors" through the contemporary adaptation of a historic collection, and not the usual presentation of the burial tomb artefacts or imitations of the same. The exhibition reaches its last port of call in Brussels, after touring several museums in China and throughout Europe.
