"I believe that art is an encounter with the unexpected that can extend our capacity for experiencing ourselves and the unknown."
Through sculpture, Blumenfeld has tried to create a language that does not depend on words but images for its impact. The forms she has used have changed, her vocabulary as a sculptor has multiplied, but the themes that have preoccupied her have been constant.
A member of the Visual Arts Panel of the Arts Council of Great Britain between 1981 and 1988, Blumenfeld was elected a member of the Royal British Society of Sculptors in 1993 and a Fellow in 2000. From 2004 to 2009 she served the society as Vice President, instigating residencies as well as expanding members’ opportunities to exhibit their work. A missionary for sculpture, Blumenfeld has used her public profile to broaden access to and appreciation of her medium, initiating and organizing regular exhibitions at the Harold Martin Botanical Gardens in Leicester and at the Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge.
